I bought my topset or Egyptian walking onions from two different nurseries and have realised that they are two variations. Stephen Barstow, in “Around the world in 80 plants” describes several varieties. This one has the characteristic of producing divisions of the bulb at the base which look rather like shallots, but it also produces white flower heads which then develop into bulbils which then start producing shoots. The bulbils are rather too small to eat, but if separated and sown, you can quickly propogate 30-40 plants from one.
