A small potted plant. Good for adding to salads most of the year round. Most growth is in spring.

Sculpit, Silene inflata, is a mediterranean perennial salad plant or herb. It is also known as Bladder Campion. I have seen seeds for this plant being sold as an annual, but the ones I have came from Incredible Vegetables who sell them as a fairly long lived perennial. Mine got through last winter and are looking fine this winter too, so I vote for the perennial label.

The plant produces long thin leaves which can be added to the salad bowl or added to omlettes. I find the flavour is quite mild and it makes a good filler, although not producing a large number of leaves, it seems to have some most of the year. Cutting stalks back when they get too leggy seems to lead to growth of new, more compact stalks. The leaves taste best in the spring.

In the summer, these plants produce pretty and unusual looking flowers which resemble lanterns. They are pale purple and loved by pollinators. They last a long time as cut flowers as well. In the right conditions, these plants self seed.

The seeds can be planted in spring or early summer. They like full sun or partial shade.
