A pink flowering sedum with purple/green fleshy leaves which taste good in a salad.

Out of stock

There are many varieties of ice plant, or sedums. Out of several that I found growing in my garden when we bought it, I have propogated the one with the best flavour. It may be “Autumn Joy”, but I cannot be sure. The leaves are fleshy and succulent with a mild flavour. It may seem odd to eat something that we are so accustomed to see as an ornamental plant, but try it out. I was amazed how good they are! They can get slightly bitter in dry weather and towards the end of summer, so best harvested in the first part of the year. Apparently they can thicken stews and soups as well, but I have not tried this yet.

Sedums tend to produce their leaves in spring and flower in late summer. The flowers are great for bees when there aren’t so many flowers around. The whole plant is quite succulent. You can propagate further plants by cuttings taken in summer. These root in a vase of water and can then be planted out. Sedums prefer sunny spots but can tolerate some shade. If you want a garden that looks more “normal” and has plenty of flowers, this is a good choice.
