Welsh onion is a bunching onion, in a way similar to shallots, but smaller. The leaves can be harvested and used instead of spring onions through much of the year. The bulbs can be harvested and dried in September. These can be eaten or replanted in the garden the following spring.
Like most alliums, the welsh onion is not too troubled by disease and pests. Its onion aroma makes it a good companion plant for fruit bushes and other plants to deter pests from finding them. Once your plant establishes, it can be divided and planted around the garden, increasing your food supplies. The leaves can be chopped and frozen, ready to use when needed.
